Memoirs of a Geisha

I enjoyed this movie. I know a lot of people didn't because they had read the book, and the book is amazing and all of that. But I haven't read it. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I feel the end was a little too wrapped up neatly in a bow, but that's the way the story goes, it's not been altered for audiences or changed to suit marketing or whatever. I think the acting in it was simply amazing. I was fully absorbed in the characters. They are not simply 2-dimensional pieces of paper, they are real women and men trying to make it through their lives. The main character has a rival who is bitter, petty and tries to basically destroy her, but she's not completely unfounded. There are reasons for her hatred and malcontent. The movie is based in a small area, mostly inside a particular house, or in a few other buildings, but it's so rich, and when they do go outside, it's very beautiful. The detail is all there. I can see why it won oscars for art and costumes and cinematography. It was wonderfully done.

A wonderful movie if you haven't read the book, but apparently doesn't even live up to the book.
