Apartment Success!!

Well Almost...

So, I've been talking to Jessica (the chick I met last sunday), and we're defintely going to live together. We hung out all day yesterday, and we have tons in common which is way cool. I put in my application for Max's place early last week (either Tusday or Wednesday), and since they won't let me sublet to her, Jessica put hers in on Friday. So hopefully we'll know if we get the place tomorrow; Tuesday at the latest. I took her by the place while we were out & about, and I love it even more. She thinks it's great. We met a couple of the neighbors, and the Mail Lady (who is very cool), and I'm really going to like living there.

We have so much to do though once we get approved though. One of the things we're doing is because we're taking it "as is." They won't be re-painting it or carpeting it. Which sounds awful when I say it, but that's a good thing. it gives us bargaining power. What we're trying to do is keep the rent at $1050 which is what Max was paying. I don't know if it'll stay there, but if it does go up, we can make them buy the fridge or something. They have to buy us a stove, but the fridge can be another bargaining chip. If they want to raise the rent, they have to buy the fridge. Otherwise, my mom found a scratch & dent appliance place. We'll also have to paint. The floors & walls all need new coats of paint and by taking it "as is" we can paint stuff any color we want. The floor obviously can be painted any color as it will most likely be carpeted when we leave. I'm liking the idea of painting it white more and more, and then putting rugs down. Rugs aren't cheap either. They're not too expensive in the run of things, but definitely not cheap.

Then the walls have to be painted. Max and Sophia had hung a lot of art and posters and such so they're filling a lot of holes and we'll need to paint just to cover the patch stuff. The colors they've got in there aren't bad though. Very Colorful, which is always good for me, but I think I'll need to make it my own. Jessica and I briefly discussed that and she's not a fan of bright colors, while I'm not a fan of pastels. So the color process could be interesting. But she loves the idea of my orange velvet chairs. So, we'll see...

I'm so unbelievably excited because I'll be on a lease for a year and who knows if I really love it I may stay here a while and save lots of money if I can get the rent cheap enough. It's in a really great location. There's a movie theater in walking distance, as well as a Trader Joe's, a Blockbuster and an In 'n' Out Burger. There's a sushi place going in, a kitchen store almost across the street. Max says the neighborhood is really, really safe, and I have no reason not to believe him.

The only thing is now I want to get a dog so I can meet people. I'm thinking about getting a cat or something because that's more my style. The only thing is, I'm just not home to take care of a pet, and Jessica has the same hours I do. So, we will have to remain petless for now. Also, neither one of us has had a pet ever in our lives. I had a couple of fish when I was like 9, but that doesn't count. Especially since my mom was the one feeding them and changing the water....

Question of the Day: What kind of pants are you wearing?

3.19.2006

Wow....

So today is my birthday, and I'm totally wiggin' out. I keep forgetting it's today because it's Sunday and Sundays are never completely coherent, because I'm in total denial that I have to go back to work tomorrow. That, of course, happens every sunday. So I'm home, alone on my birthday, and I'm perfectly happy. We did the drinking thing last night, so I don't feel the need to drink excessively. I'm sitting here watching the Rainmaker (awesome movie by the way) and drinking a Dr. Skipper (Safeway's generic Dr. Pepper). I'm going to do some baking later, but I have to get motivated to clean the dishes first. The cutting board and the bowl I use are both dirty. I think doing dishes is my least favorite chore out of everything. I can do laundry. I'll scrub the floors. I can clean the toilet. But I hate doing the dishes.

So I looked at two apartments today. They were both OK. The first one was in Palms and a nice place until I noticed that the guy I'd be rooming with slept on the floor in the living room. Plus the woman in the room now had filled it with incense. It'd be a nice place if I could have it on my own, but not with a 40-year-old guy sleeping in the open. It's the same problem I had with the one place in Santa Monica. The cool thing about it though was that while I was there another girl showed up to look at the place and she was really cool. She and I had so much in common!! I am so excited because I actually have a female friend now!! The second place I went to see was in a gated community that was awesome. It was a townhouse that had a tiny room on the lower floor. If the room had been bigger, I might have taken it simply because the house itself was beautiful and the neighborhood was awesome. It was $595 including utilities. The woman who was renting the place was so cute! She had to be about 4 foot 10, Japanese, and had a rather thick accent. I really liked her, I loved her place, and the community was great. The problem was that the room was miniscule. It was about the same size as my dorm room when I was up at Simon's Rock. I wouldn't mind that so much except for the fact that I've got a bookshelf that my dad built when he was younger and more spry. It wouldn't fit into that room and I really couldn't put it anywhere else. And at the rent she's charging, I couldn't store it. If I could part with it, or hadn't brought it with me, I would completely take that place.

The coolest thing though is that I got a call from Max today and he's giving me his apartment for my birthday!! Well, sorta. He and his wife are moving out at the end of the month. But there's an upstairs unit that's supposed to be leased for $1300, but it's sat empty for 3 months. So what I'm hoping to do is get into it at the rent he's currently paying without any turnover time. Which means basically that I'll get in there with the walls still painted the color he's got on the walls. There's no carpet: it's cement floors. Which is actually really cool, because they're painted, so I can paint them any color. I'm really excited. He's putting in notice that they're moving either today or tomorrow. So, I called the management/realtor who Max said takes care of the building, and I left a message. I didn't get an answer so I'm hoping I hear tomorrow, but if I don't, I'll call him on my lunch.

So, Discovery has a new TV series called "Perfect Disaster" and it's awesome. I'm watching it right now and they just had a rain of fish in Dallas, preceding a Super-Tornado that could form. I love the Discovery channel and all it's subsets. They're so cool. This particular show completely feeds people paranoia and fear of Mother Nature. It's awesome. Especially because it's all possible...

Question of the Day: How much trouble did you have in finding your current living space?

3.05.2006

Who Knew?

So, I think that people at work now have the wrong idea about me. The pictures in the previous entry are from a going away party for some people from work, and I got rather drunk, even though I really didn't mean to. So the thing is, I hadn't eaten at all that day (I think I had had a bowl of cereal and barely something for lunch), and then I had a drink with Ciclon (it's a rum with tequila and lime in it), and after that I was so gone that I think I made the wrong impression on a lot of people. The thing is, because I don't normally drink, and because I hadn't eaten, it took very little to get me drunk. But at least I knew better than to drive home. Plus, I think a problem was that once I do get even marginally drunk, I stop self-editing. So I then stole a shot from someone. I don't think I fully meant to but he had two drinks in his hands, and I just said, "Oh, is that for me?" And then he gave it to me. So that was a bad idea, but it wasn't entirely my fault.

But enough of that...

My mom is here visiting right now for the weekend. She came in to visit because I haven't seen her since she left after helping me drive out here. It's really great because I'm sick, and trying to find a new apartment and everything else all at once. I missed her. I've been talking to her everyday, but it's not quite the same as being able to see her and talk to her over dinner.

So I'm watching the Oscar pre-show on E! and it's so fun. Ryan Seacrest is slightly less obnoxious than I expected him to be. Isaac Mizrahi has resolved not to grope anyone. And all the stars are arriving....

Question of the Day: Have you ever unintentionally made a bad impression on people you really should have tried harder with?
